Understanding HPV and the Importance of Vaccination

What Are Genital Warts?

Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by certain sub-types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

They spread through skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner.

In rare cases, HPV may spread through hand-to-genital contact, but this is uncommon.

HPV cannot be transmitted through non-living objects like toilet seats or towels.

Symptoms And Signs Of Genital Warts

Genital warts appear as small, flesh-coloured or grey growths on the skin. They may be flat or raised, single or multiple, and can appear on or around the genital and anal areas.

Male

  • Urethra
  • Anus

Some may experience itching, discomfort, or mild bleeding during intercourse, but many cases are painless. If left untreated, genital warts can enlarge or spread, so early medical evaluation is important for effective removal.

How Is HPV Transmitted?

HPV is passed through:

  • Vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person
  • Close genital-to-genital contact, even without penetration
  • Rarely, hand-to-genital contact

HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted viruses. Most sexually active adults will contract it at some point in life[1].

Frequently Asked Questions About Genital Warts Treatment In Singapore

How Do I Know If I Have Genital Warts?

Genital warts appear as small bumps or clusters of bumps on or around the genitals, anus, groin, or upper thighs. They may be flesh-colored, pink, red, or gray, and can be flat, raised, or have a cauliflower-like texture. Most warts are painless but may occasionally itch, bleed, or cause discomfort. If you notice any unusual growths in your genital area, visit our clinic for examination and diagnosis. The appearance of warts varies for each individual.

Where Do Genital Warts Appear?

In men, genital warts commonly appear on the penis, scrotum, groin, thighs, or around the anus.

In women, they can develop on the vulva, vagina, cervix, groin, thighs, or around the anus.

Warts can appear as single growths or in clusters. In some cases, they may also develop inside the urethra or anal canal, though this is less common.

How Did I Get Genital Warts?

Genital warts are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has HPV. You can contract genital warts even if your partner has no visible symptoms, as HPV can be present without any signs. Condoms reduce but do not completely prevent transmission since HPV can infect areas not covered by condoms. The incubation period can range from weeks to months, so it may be difficult to determine when or from whom you contracted the virus[3].

Can Genital Warts Go Away On Their Own?

Some genital warts may disappear naturally as your immune system clears the virus, but this can take months or even years. During that time, warts can grow, multiply, or spread to partners. We recommend treatment to remove visible warts quickly, reduce the risk of transmission, and provide peace of mind. Even if warts disappear, HPV may remain dormant in your body.

More information from CDC.

Can I Have Sex If I Have Genital Warts?

It is best to avoid sexual contact until your warts are completely treated and healed, which typically takes several weeks. Even after treatment, HPV can still be transmitted since the virus may remain in the skin. We strongly recommend using condoms consistently to reduce transmission risk, though they do not offer complete protection. Inform your partner about your condition so they can make informed decisions and consider seeing a doctor.

How Soon Can I Get Treated?

We offer same-day and next-day appointments for genital warts treatment in Singapore. Walk-ins are welcome depending on availability. During your first visit, we will examine the warts, discuss suitable treatment options, and often begin treatment immediately. We understand the anxiety and embarrassment surrounding genital warts and provide prompt, professional, judgment-free care in a confidential environment.

Will Genital Warts Come Back After Treatment?

Genital warts can recur after treatment because the treatment removes visible warts but does not eliminate HPV from your body. Studies show recurrence rates of 20–30% within the first few months after treatment[4]. Over time, as your immune system suppresses the virus, recurrences typically become less frequent. Completing your treatment plan, attending follow-up visits, and maintaining a strong immune system can help reduce the risk of recurrence.

More information on recurrence from CDC.

Are Genital Warts Dangerous?

While typically not dangerous, they can cause discomfort and are contagious[5]. It is always best to have them diagnosed and treated by a doctor.

How Are Genital Warts Removed?

There are several effective methods, including topical treatments, cryotherapy (freezing), and surgical removal. Our doctor will recommend the suitable option for you.

Is The Treatment Painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal. Topical medications may cause skin irritation or burning. Our doctor will recommend medication to ease the irritation if it happens. Most patients do not have any effects from the topical medications.
