What Is HIV?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T-cells), which help the body fight infections. Without treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) — the most severe stage of infection[1].
HIV vs. AIDS
- HIV is the virus that weakens the immune system.
- AIDS is the condition that occurs when HIV severely damages the immune system and leads to opportunistic infections.
With early detection and proper treatment, people living with HIV can lead long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
How HIV Spreads
HIV spreads through contact with infected body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk[2].
Common modes of transmission include:
- Unprotected sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral)
- Sharing of needles or syringes
- Blood Transfusion
- Transmission from mother to child during birth or breastfeeding
HIV is not spread through casual contact, sharing food, hugging, or mosquito bites[2].
Signs and Symptoms
Many people with HIV show no symptoms for years, which is why regular testing is important. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
Fever and sore throat
Fatigue and body aches
Swollen lymph nodes
Skin rash
Unexplained weight loss or night sweats
If you’ve had recent sexual exposure or are uncertain about your risk, get tested promptly for peace of mind.
Why Early Detection Matters
Early testing allows for:
- Timely treatment to prevent the progression to AIDS
- Reduced transmission risk to partners
- Improved long-term health outcomes
At AscendCare, we ensure accurate and confidential HIV testing in Singapore with results explained clearly by our doctor.

A Guide to HIV Prevention: PrEP & PEP
What is PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)?
PrEP is a daily medication taken by HIV-negative individuals to prevent getting HIV before a potential exposure. When taken consistently, it is highly effective at stopping the virus from establishing an infection[3].
- What it is: A daily pill (Tenofovir & Emtricitabine).
- When it’s recommended: For HIV-negative individuals who are at ongoing high risk of exposure.
- How long to take it: It’s a daily medication. It must be taken for at least 7 days to reach maximum protection for anal sex. For receptive vaginal and frontal sex, it must be taken daily, and to reach maximum protection, it typically takes about 20 days.
What is PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)?
PEP is an emergency 28-day course of medication taken after a potential exposure to HIV. It is not a substitute for regular prevention methods.
- What it is: A 28-day course of three anti-retroviral drugs.
- When it’s recommended: For HIV-negative individuals who’ve had a recent high-risk exposure (e.g., condom broke, unprotected sex with a partner of unknown status).
- How long to take it: You must start PEP within 72 hours (3 days) of the exposure[4]. The sooner you start, the more effective it is. You must then take the full 28-day course.
HIV Prevention Timeline: PrEP vs. PEP
PrEP (Pre-Exposure)
Take daily or on-demand before any risk for ongoing prevention.
Duration: Daily (Ongoing) or On-Demand (Event-based)
Potential Exposure (Time 0)
A high-risk event occurs (e.g., condom break).
ACTION IS CRITICAL
PEP (Post-Exposure)
Emergency medication after exposure.
Start: Within 72 hours
Duration: 28-day course
